South Asian Heritage Month: Taibah Akhtar

Part nine of our South Asian Heritage Month feature.

To celebrate South Asian Heritage Month 2024, we are interviewing several referees, coaches and players from South Asian backgrounds across the grassroots game in West Riding.

Up next is Taibah Akhtar, currently of Route One Rovers and formerly of Bradford City Juniors and Athletico FC.

Tell us about how and why you got involved in playing football?

I started playing football because I have an older sister who plays. I would always watch her play and think that it was something I wanted to get into. She got me into playing and she also taught me most of the stuff I know today.

What do you enjoy about playing football?

One thing I enjoy about playing football is the positive relationships you build with people regardless of their background, religion, race, age etc.

What is your best memory of playing?

My best memory of playing would be winning a 7 a-side tournament in Portugal with my teammates.

What do you want to achieve in playing football?

I would like to win the league this season with my team.

What are the biggest obstacles you have faced in playing football?

One of the biggest obstacles I have faced playing football would be playing under the shadow of my older sister as we have always played for the same team and she is a very skilled player, which puts a bit of pressure on me.

Who’s had the biggest influence in your playing football career and why?

My biggest influence would be my sister as she is by far one of the most talented South Asian players I have seen play, and this motivates me to try and be as talented as she is.

What advice would you give to people wishing to get involved in playing football?

I would say just get involved and play regardless of what you look like or where you come.
